School Bus Monitor

 

Job Summary:

 

The School Bus Monitor assists the bus driver in providing safe and orderly transportation of students. The monitor is responsible for maintaining a secure, supportive, and respectful environment on the school bus.

 

Essential Responsibilities:

• Assists students with disabilities in safely boarding and exiting the bus, including securing mobility devices, seat belts, safety vests, or car seats.
• Monitor student behavior and provide supervision to ensure compliance with bus rules.
• Support students with special needs by providing reassurance, positive reinforcement, and redirection as necessary.
• Assistant in emergency situations, including evacuations, following established safety procedures.
• Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with district policy and FERPA.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the safe operation of school transportation. 

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

• Patience, compassion, and ability to work with children and adolescents with diverse needs and disabilities.
• Basic knowledge of child safety and first aid.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in emergency situations.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift, push, or pull when assisting students with mobility devices.
• Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching.
• Ability to assist students in wheelchairs or other adaptive equipment.
• Ability to work in and around a school bus in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow) and tolerate moderate to high noise levels from traffic and student passengers.
• Ability to maintain alertness and attention for extended periods while supervising students on the bus.
• Ability to evacuate students safely in case of an emergency, which may involve lifting, carrying, or guiding students out of the bus.

Terms of Employment:

 

180 Days; Salary based on district Salary Scale for Bus Monitor

 

Evaluation:

 

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
