Reading Interventionist Teacher 

Job Summary:

The Reading Interventionist Teacher provides targeted reading instruction to elementary students who require additional support in literacy development. This educator works collaboratively with classroom teachers, instructional coaches, and school leadership to implement evidence-based interventions that help students achieve grade-level reading proficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess students’ reading abilities using formal and informal assessments.
  • Develop and implement individualized and small-group intervention plans based on data.
  • Use research-based instructional strategies to support students struggling with phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust interventions as needed to ensure academic growth.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to align intervention strategies with core reading instruction.
  • Provide professional development and coaching to teachers on best practices in literacy instruction.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and strategies for reading support at home.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, intervention plans, and assessment data.
  • Support school-wide literacy initiatives and participate in professional learning communities (PLCs).

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education, Reading/Literacy, or a related field.
  • Certification: South Carolina teaching certification with a focus on Literacy, Reading Specialist, or related endorsements preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Prior experience teaching elementary students, preferably in reading intervention or literacy instruction.
    • Familiarity with Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Response to Intervention (RTI) models.
  • Skills & Knowledge:
    • Strong understanding of the Science of Reading and best practices in literacy instruction.
    • Ability to analyze assessment data and make instructional decisions.
    • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
    • Knowledge of instructional technology to enhance literacy instruction.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • LETRS literacy training.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations, including English Language Learners (ELLs) and students with reading disabilities.

Work Environment:

  • Elementary school setting with small-group and one-on-one instruction.
  • Collaboration with teachers, specialists, and administrators.
  • Occasional professional development and training opportunities.

Work Context:

  • Requires standing.
  • Requires walking.
  • Job tasks are performed in close physical proximity to other people.
  • Requires working indoors in environmentally controlled conditions and working outdoors.

Terms of Employment:

 

190 days per school year; Salary based on District Scale for Teachers

 

Evaluation:

 

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Certified Staff.
